Sherlock Holmes Grammar

Questions are sometimes difficult to form correctly in English.

Part 1

Look at the presentation Question Formation and then do the activity here. Send your correctly written questions to me in an email.

In this story, Doyle wrote many “questions” that aren't formed properly. For each of the examples below, rewrite it as a correctly formed question.

  1. And your mother is alive?
  2. And you don't know his address?
  3. It missed him, then?
  4. But you have no notion as to what it could have been?

Part 2

Then respond to this question on your blog:

  • Why do you think Doyle didn't form all his questions correctly? Could it ever be OK for you to write questions incorrectly? If so, when?
