ESL 093 – ACADEMIC VOCABULARY AND GRAMMAR

Required Text: Focus on Grammar 3 by Fuchs, Bonner & Westheimer

Other Required Materials: Composition book with at least 100 pages or two smaller books for exclusive use in this class; English-English dictionary that can be brought to class each day.

Course Description: This course is designed to help students review and learn basic English grammar. Students will examine the grammatical structure of academic texts. The course will also reinforce students' general English vocabulary and introduce academic vocabulary. Practice writing short pieces in an academic style using academic vocabulary and grammatical structures. Students will also be responsible for teaching one or more grammar points to the entire class. Students will do extensive reading as part of this course. Much of the work they do will be individualized based on the needs and interests of the students.

Course Objectives: The overall objective of this course is to help students learn vocabulary and improve their understanding of English grammar.

At the end of this course, students will be able to do the following:
Understand vocabulary and grammar when he/she reads
Figure out the meaning of words from context or using background knowledge
Use correct grammar, vocabulary, spelling and punctuation when he/she writes

Attendance: Students are expected to come to class ever day and to arrive on time. If students cannot come to class, they are expected to call or email the instructor. You are allowed three absences before I start subtracting points. Starting with the 4th absence, REGARDLESS OF THE REASON, I will deduct 5 points from your total score for each absence.

Academic Integrity: It is assumed that students will do their own work in this and all other classes. Students who cheat, plagiarize or commit other acts of academic dishonesty will be penalized with a lowered grade and/or other disciplinary action. Vocabulary stories: 10 x 20 pts 200
Vocabulary logs: 13 wks x 15pts 195
Grammar log: 13 x 9 pts 117
Grammar papers: 5 x 25 pts 125

Midterm presentation – 50 pts 50
Midterm Vocabulary story – 100 pts 100

Final presentation – 75 pts 75
Final Vocabulary story – 100 pts 100

Total Points Possible 962

Points for each assignment will be determined as follows:
vocab stories: 1 pt for meaning, 1 pt for form
Vocab logs: at least 5 words per day; 1 pt for meaning, 1 for other forms, 1 for example = 15 pts per week
Grammar log: at least 3 examples per day; 1 pt for example, 2 pts for new sentence from example = 9 pts per week

Determining the Grade: At the end of the semester, points will be added up and compared to the total possible number of points to determine the final grade in the course. As noted above, points will be deducted from the total number of points earned throughout the semester starting with the 4th absence.

90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
60-69% = D
