Course Description: This class introduces students to the skills they need to read academic texts, including work with vocabulary and grammar. In addition, students will write academic papers in different genre based on the readings done for class.

Course Objectives: Students will work on reading articles and writing about them using a variety of common writing formats. By the end of the term, students should be able to do these things:

  • Explain orally and in writing the major ideas of an academic reading.
  • Write a summary of an academic text.
  • Write an in-class essay on an assigned topic.
  • Explain orally and in writing information presented in charts and graphs.
  • Explain orally and in writing how the ideas in an academic text relate to each other.
  • Answer questions orally and in writing about the content of academic texts.
  • Quickly find needed information in an academic text.
  • Demonstrate understanding of vocabulary and grammar found in academic texts.
  • Write in response to academic texts.

Assignments and Grading:

Assignments will include a variety of activities, including

Daily quizzes 10 pts each
Group projects 15 pts each
Summaries 10 pts each
Summary/Reactions 15 pts each
Major papers 40 pts each
In-Class Writing 20 pts each

Grades will be based on total points earned during the semester. Points will be added up and compared to the total possible number of points to determine the final grade in the course. Letter grades will be assigned as follows:

90-100% = A
80-89% = B
70-79% = C
60-69% = D

Attendance: Students are expected to come to class every day and to arrive on time. If students cannot come to class, they are expected to call or email the instructor. Informing the instructor of an absence DOES NOT entitle the student to make up any missed assignment or to turn in an assignment after the due date. The instructor may make exceptions under certain circumstances.

Academic Integrity: It is assumed that students will do their own work in this and all other classes. Students who cheat, plagiarize or commit other acts of academic dishonesty will be penalized with a lowered grade and/or other disciplinary action.
